Kosas The Big Lash Mascara

How to Care for Your Lashes

Long, fluttery eyelashes have always been associated with beauty and sex appeal, but there’s a lot more to the story than just the way they look. Like our hair, they require special attention to stay healthy, happy, and volumized. Here’s a lesson on lashes and how to love them.

What are they even?

The real difference between eyelashes and hair hair is in the growth stage, or anagen phase, which varies depending on the part of your body. Lashes have a much shorter anagen phase, so they grow a lot slower than our hair and fall out before getting super long. Same for brows. It’s normal for us to lose around one and five lashes per day (even more as we age), and each individual lash takes a month to six weeks to come back.

Why do we have them?

Lashes are working hard while looking good. Their main job is to protect eyes from dust and other particles that can lead to infection, but they also flush out the things that do make their way in, and seal in moisture so your eyes don’t get too dry. They even help shield your sight from intense sun, with support from your brows and forehead. Finally, lashes are kind of like cat whiskers (cute!) and sense things that get a little too close for comfort, setting off the blink reflex.

How can I get mine longer and fuller?

The lash-shedding cycle is totally normal and natural, but there are some ways to hold on to the lashes you’ve got for longer and encourage more growth:

  • Don’t rub your eyes—this makes them fall out at a faster rate.
  • Always use a light touch and non-irritating products to remove makeup. Stay away from harsh foams, and opt for milky formulas or oil cleansers instead.
  • Nourish them with ingredients like castor oil and biotin that support growth and repair. Our new mascara has both of these, plus lots more lash-loving goodness.
  • Comb those little guys (gently!) with a clean spoolie to stimulate the follicles.
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in protein and fatty acids to give lashes all the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.
  • Start taking a supplement that encourages hair growth. Again, biotin is your go-to here.
